I thought I would take a different approach this week to connect our readers to some further resources for Art Therapy. There are some great blogs on the internet as well as some great written literature on the topic.
Art Therapy is a relatively new field, but there are a lot of great minds working to develop and expand it. Taking the time to make art can inspire self-discovery, reduce anxiety and depression, and increase creativity. Here are some books I recommend for women exploring art as a new venue of self-expression and personal growth:
Art is a Way of Knowing, by Pat Allen: Pat Allen is an honorary lifetime member of the American Art Therapy Association, the association’s biggest honor for contribution to the field. This book inspired me to create my own artwork and look for lessons in every image I create.
The Soul’s Palette, by Cathy Malchiodi: Cathy Malchiodi is another big name in our field, and she has written several books. This book describes the importance of expressing yourself through art and achieving inner wisdom by keeping a regular practice. Ms. Malchiodi also writes for the Arts and Health section of Psychology Today (http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/arts-and-health).
Art and Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking, by David Bayles and Ted Orland: This book helps move the concept of artmaking to a more accessible place and can help both beginners and seasoned artists.
Flow, by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi: Flow is the concept developed by this psychologist that describes the process of healing through complete immersion in a focused, enjoyable activity. It is rooted in positive psychology and relates to some of the ways artmaking is such a powerful healing tool.
