Antioxidant Sunshine Smoothie

Tuesday, 19 November 2013 19:14  by Jessica W.

Smoothies are a tasty way to get plenty of the nutrients we need in our day. This creamy smoothie tastes like a bowl of sunshine; it’s a perfect pick-me-up on a dreary autumn day.

Açaí is a small fruit from the acai palm tree in Central and South America. It is packed with beneficial antioxidants and provides plenty of important vitamins and minerals, like vitamin B, potassium and manganese. Both the acai and chia seeds in this recipe provide omega-3 fatty acids so beneficial for maintaining mental health and positive mood.

  • ½ banana
  • 1 cup frozen raspberries
  • 1 tablespoon acai powder
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon protein powder
  • optional toppings: pomegranate seeds, granola, hemp seeds

To prepare, add all the ingredients to the blender and process until smooth and creamy. Serve and sprinkle with the toppings of your choice. This recipe can be altered to include your favorite fruits and veggies. Try adding a few cups of spinach for even more nutrition, or replacing the berries with mango for a taste of the tropics.

If you are unfamiliar with making smoothies, they can be made is so many wonderful ways! They are an easy way to consume vegetables, fruits, seeds, and nutrients. Other flavors can include berries, apples, kale, sweet potato, butternut squash, cacao nibs, hemp seeds, etc. in various combinations. Try strawberry-banana; maple, cinnamon and butternut squash; or blackberry, spinach and flax. Smoothies can be a tasty way to exercise your creativity.
