On Thursday, the women in Brookhaven Retreat’s residential treatment program participated in a bi-weekly juicing class. This week’s juice was a simple yet flavorful combination of pears, grapes and spinach.
Juicing grapes provides many of the excellent health benefits of the fruit without the added sugars, chemicals or preservatives found in commercial juices. The antioxidants in grapes have been shown to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease and improve cholesterol levels.
Pear, meanwhile, adds a honeyed flavor that is mild yet delicious. High levels of antioxidants boost cognitive acuity and the immune system. Pear also has an anti-inflammatory effect that can relieve pain and improve wellness.
Finally, spinach is a mild green that does not dominate the flavor of juices to which it is added. It is a rich source of many nutrients including vitamin K, vitamin A, manganese, folate, potassium and iron. It has also been shown to help lower blood pressure.
All three of these ingredients are alkalizing, helping to balance pH levels in the body, which increases energy and improves overall health. The weekly juicing classes at Brookhaven Retreat encourage women to be mindful of their nutritional needs and enjoy the freshest foods available.
