The Stigma of “Treatment”

Wednesday, 04 March 2015 00:00  by Lori R.

When you say “treatment center” there is such a stigma attached. What will my family and friends think? Will my employer ever look at me the same? Will I get fired? Everyone will know there is something “wrong” with me. The truth is that everything that is “right” about you just needs to be strengthened in a process called recovery. You can receive “treatment” anywhere, but for true recovery, every aspect of your being must be addressed.

I used to be hesitant to mention that I attended grief counseling or that I have taken anti-depressant medication. I have long since lost any care for what people think, because my well-being is a priority. Asking for and receiving help is never a sign of weakness! It is a sign of strength that you know what you need and go after it.

Treatment implies something being done to you, while recovery is an act from within, using the tools you are given. The holistic approach to recovery at Brookhaven Retreat offers tools for body, mind and spirit to come together in balance. Not only are emotional issues addressed, but physical, nutritional, neurological… every dimension that makes you who you are. You are capable of being the person you want to be once you have the tools to achieve it.

The tools you need to create a life worth living are what make Brookhaven Retreat a “comprehensive” recovery program. As a dual diagnosis program, we can provide support for multiple concerns. Through a wide range of therapy options and techniques, you will find what works best for you and helps you begin your recovery, without any stigma attached.
