When we think of the term “anxiety” we generally think of the extremes of anxiety—such as people who stay inside because they are anxious about the outdoors, and people who have anxiety attacks every day of their lives. But in reality, anxiety is something that plagues more people than one might believe. According to the ADAA, anxiety troubles more than 40 million adult Americans. But only 1/3 of those 40 million are receiving treatment for it. Anxiety is something that is very treatable, and can be taken under control if the right steps are taken, but the majority of people who have anxiety choose to either ignore it, or to try to rise above it.
We generally do not think of celebrities, or people who are higher-up in society, as having anxiety, because anxiety is seen as a weakness in our culture. It is something to be avoided, or to bury deep down so no one finds out about it. It is interesting that a famous pop singer casually mentioned it in an interview recently.
Taylor Swift, in her interview about the new acoustic version of her song “Out of the Woods”, stated that she herself has suffered from anxiety, while in a previous relationship. She claimed that she was never able to fully relax and be with her partner, but she was constantly worried and anxious about the future, about their relationship and about everything that they were supposed to be, but weren’t.
She said that you either get what you want out of relationships, or you don’t, and that is simply a way of life. And she’s right. There is honestly no reason to make yourself anxious over another person (or for any reason at all!)—if you are, then something needs to be fixed! You either need treatment for your anxiety, or you need to get out of the situation or relationship that is causing you anxiety.
Taylor Swift got out of the relationship that she recognized was giving her anxiety, and that helped her. But some women need more than just a simple break-up to get better.
