Perspective: An Aerial View

It is no secret that stepping back to view a whole situation can help you understand it. Google Earth has opened so many possibilities by providing areal footage of locations from around the world. This footage and technology has made it possible to see anywhere on earth from a giant aerial view, and the vantage point provides much insight. In a recent release, Google published several aesthetically pleasing aerial images in a new series. In the new series I saw an areal view of a large dessert. Instead of seeing it as a hot and dry desolate wasteland, like it might feel if I was stuck in it, I saw the beautiful designs that the rolling sand dunes make over miles and miles. It was so peaceful and serene to see, like someone had finger painted with gold dust. You get to see a much broader picture when you are slightly removed, and the same is true in your personal life. When we step back from an emotional situation it helps us see all of the aspects of it.

Sometimes recovery and inpatient treatment are precisely the type of perspective needed to see your life more clearly. The intense emotions and blurring effects of mental illness can make it difficult to properly see your options and make clear decisions. Extreme depression, intense anger, bouts of mania, and uncontrollable energy can make it impossible to sort out difficult situations or even make simple choices. Time, space and a change of scenery are all other ways to gain perspective and control. Taking time to come to a retreat or recovery center can bring clarity and healing to help you make the decisions and choices that you need to, and to see yourself in a different way. Giving yourself space from certain situations or people could help you see them in a different way. Meditating or practicing mindfulness can be ways of giving yourself distance from certain emotions or stressors that can blur clarity.
