The roar of background noise follows us in our every waking moment. From music, TV, and internal thoughts, silence these days is rare.
A variety of noises are giving our brains signals. Some sounds hearken to memories, while others alert us to physical danger or immediate action. Even if you just hear background noise your brain is hard at work reacting and listening to every sound. Some intentional silence can help ease the stress and let your mind mend.
Some ways to capture that moment of solitude:
- Turn off your phone (the radio and the TV).
- Set a timer: giving yourself a reminder when your quite time is over will help you not stress about what’s next on your agenda.
- Intentionally quiet your mind: turning off technology can be a small step to solitude if your internal thoughts are racing. Try using a mindfulness app, or focusing on your breathing to help slow your racing mind.
- Build quiet time into your routine. Find a time that works for you and your life, and plan for it.
If you need additional incentive to take these steps to silence, think about the benefits. Quiet time releases stress and tension; allowing the brain to reset. Take time out of your day to replenish your mental resources, and give your mind a break.
