In my free time, I love to experiment in the kitchen. Some call it cooking, but with me it truly is experimenting, because I’m not quite sure what will happen. This week my project has been bread, more specifically quick loaves and French bread. What a lesson in patience cooking can be.
I looked up several recipes, because I like to know the concepts and general process before I begin. The more I thought about the steps of making bread, the more it seemed like a narrative of the recovery process and how to get the most out of making changes in our lives. When facing depression, grief, or addiction, changing and getting help is a multilayer process that involves seeking help and changing long-standing behaviors.
Below are steps for creating lasting change:
- Start with a proponent of change.
For some this is the moment you decide to get help, when you enter into a treatment facility, or when you realize you have a problem.
- Add an activator.
This is the strength within us.
- Give yourself support and add reinforcements.
This is your support system of family and friends
- Work it.
Work on the difficult and messy parts, go over them, and push though the bumps that come up.
- Give it time.
Let certain things set…
- Check in on it.
... and be mindful of changes that are happening all on their own.
- Add energy to solidify.
This is the time and effort you have put in to recovery after you leave a treatment facility, or when you start actively implementing new behaviors and routines.
Change is never done, but these steps are good ways to be mindful that there is much more than one action involved.
