The Cannes Film Festival is a world-renowned festival that happens annually in Cannes, France. I was lucky enough to have met some film students in my travels that had shown one of their films there. They told me of tents and red carpets and famous artistic minds.
This year the festival is being praised for recognizing women, and most of the directors have chosen strong female leads, or all female casts, which has been previously unheard of. Three of the top contenders for the highest awarded prize, The Palme d’Or, were women.
This trend of seeing women direct and act, taking leading roles in media and art, is representative of personal stories and experiences that women have to share. The female voice is such a unique narrator of very personal experiences. Being a facility for women and by women, Brookhaven Retreat®, LLC, understands the significance of the personal stories and experiences of the ladies that choose a path of recovery.
Depression, addiction, grief, and other mental illnesses are unique experiences that can be isolating. Surrounding these women with community and professional resources like that of The Lily Program® help to support while giving an ear to their stories. This sense of community and nurturing environment gives women back the personal power to continue their narratives. For stories and films not yet presented, I want to encourage women to tell their stories and support each other.
