Childhood Characters and Mental Disorders – Part One

Saturday, 25 June 2016 00:00  by Caitlin Y.

Recently I read an article that got me thinking about the correlation between my favorite childhood characters and mental disorders. The article was based on one story in particular, and you may also recollect the characters …

Do you recall a cute, chubby bear that couldn’t get enough honey? What you may not realize is that he and his friends suffered from various mental disorders.

The Canadian Medical Association wrote an article that diagnosed this particular bear with the following disorders:

  1. Impulsivity with obsessive fixations: He is obsessed with honey and will do what ever it takes, putting himself and his friends at risk to get it.
  2. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A strain of this disorder, inattentive subtype is when a person shows careless and indifferent behavior towards his peers.
  3. Obsessive-compulsive disorder: He likes to count, a lot. He exhibits repetitive counting. Interestingly, because he suffers from OCD and ADHD, he could end up with Tourette Syndrome later on in life.

Stay tuned for the second part of this blog where I will explore the cute bear’s friends and the mental disorders with which they struggle.
