An apple a day keeps the doctor away. We have all certainly heard this phrase hundreds if not thousands of times in our lives, but what does it mean? Well I can assure you it is not a guarantee from the apple growers of America that their product will rid your body of any illness. Instead it is a simple statement based on an idea that healthy and mindful eating based on proper nutrition can lead to a healthier life. And we do not have to search the jungles of Venezuela or climb Everest to find foods that can really make a difference in our lives.

  • Lemons are high in immune boosting vitamin C, can act as an anti-inflammatory, and have been proven to increase good cholesterol.
  • Salmon is an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids, which have shone to reduce your risk of depression, heart disease, and even some cancers.
  • Spinach contains antioxidants, which have been proven to boost the immune system and eye health.
  • Garlic is another anti-inflammatory and can even inhibit the growth of bacteria in the body.

What else do all of these have in common? Garlic and lemon are great flavor enhancers for a piece of grilled salmon. Place that salmon on a bed of fresh spinach with some cucumbers, tomatoes, and red bell peppers, then drizzle a bit of your favorite vinaigrette, and you’ve got a super food salad, that will satisfy your need for nutrition as well as flavor.
