Brookhaven Retreat Hosted a Karaoke Dance Party with Clients in Recognition of Karaoke Week.

Brookhaven Retreat, a unique residential treatment facility exclusively for women with mental health and/or substance abuse issues, hosted a karaoke dance party with clients on site in recognition of Karaoke Week.

Brookhaven Retreat®, LLC, a unique residential treatment facility exclusively for women with emotional and mental health challenges, and/or substance abuse issues hosted a karaoke dance party with clients in recognition of Karaoke Week.

Brookhaven Retreat recognized Karaoke Week in April. To celebrate, Brookhaven Retreat staff combined music therapy with movement therapy in an on-site karaoke dance party with staff and clients. Dana Setzer, Program Counselor and resident Zumba Instructor, hosted the event on Friday, April 24, 2015. The clients were energized and invigorated with positive energy while building self-confidence through the use of high-energy dance music and upbeat lyrics. The karaoke dance party provided an opportunity for clients to express their feeling in a safe, appropriate way.

In a therapeutic setting, music and movement therapy are used as a tool to open constructive conversations while engaging emotions in a meaningful, fun manner. Therapeutic karaoke improves social interactions within a group. “We believe that recovery entails more than just a recovery room,” said Jacqueline Dawes, founder of Brookhaven Retreat. “Music can help women connect with themselves and with others through movement and activity, both of which can be daunting for women recovering from trauma or isolation.” This type of physically vigorous therapy reduces emotional distress and boosts overall quality of life. Both movement and music have been shown to improve mood and lessen stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and bipolar symptoms.
