Psychiatrists of Brookhaven Retreat Prepare to Take Addiction Medicine Exam

Brookhaven Retreat LLC is dedicated to offering the highest quality of care to women with emotional and mental health challenges and/or substance abuse issues. That’s why two treating psychiatrists at Brookhaven Retreat are preparing to take the exam given by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) in October.

Established in 2007, the ABAM is the nation’s first medical specialty board to certify addiction medicine physicians across a range of medical specialties. ABAM sets standards for physician education, assesses physicians’ knowledge and requires and tracks life-long education. ABAM was formed in order to increase access to and ensure the quality of evidence-based medical treatment for addiction, no matter where a patient is seen. Although it has been documented that one in five Americans has an addictive disorder, there had not been a medical specialty board to ensure physician competence in all aspects of addiction care.

Their mission is to promote the training and certification of addiction medicine physicians around the country like Dr. Kelly Ownby and Dr. Kris Houser so they may possess the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and treat addiction.

Dr. Ownby brings eight years of psychiatric experience to Brookhaven Retreat and has served as a member of the North American Society for Psychosocial Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Houser has worked in many clinical settings, both inpatient and outpatient, and has maintained a private practice in Knoxville, TN as well as a medical practice at Peninsula Psychiatric Hospital in Louisville, TN.

“Brookhaven Retreat is fully committed to all levels of training for all of our staff,” says Brookhaven’s founder, Jacqueline Dawes. “We have the utmost confidence in Dr. Ownby and Dr. Houser and the exam only solidifies our commitment to our clients so they may be treated with the highest level of care possible.”
