Success Stories

Here are just a few of the success stories shared by our alumnae to express their satisfaction and gratitude for the program and to inspire other women to take the steps they did to gain control of their lives.

Dear Brookhaven, Coming to this progam has saved my life. I was broken when I first arrived, and over the past 90 days, I have gained my life back.
Brookhaven, I’ve sat here staring at the blank page with so many things to say and no idea where to start.
“Once we truly know that life is difficult – once we truly understand and accept it – then life is no longer difficult.”– M. Scott Peck, The Road Less Travelled
Dear Brookhaven, Three months ago, I came to Brookhaven Retreat feeling lonely and misunderstood.
Dear Brookhaven, It is really hard to know where to begin, how about the day I walked through the front doors at Brookhaven Retreat, the amazing place I would call home for the next four months.
Dear Brookhaven, The choice I decided to make to come here and start a new journey has been the best choice I have ever made.
Before coming to Brookhaven I was anxious, depressed, and afraid. Afraid that I wouldn’t get well, that I would be living the rest of my life in a state of panic.
Dear Brookhaven, I arrived here in the true definition of a heron with a broken wing.
Dear Brookhaven, This has been quite a journey. I can't believe it has been three months since I stepped through these doors.
Jacqueline Dawes and the entire Brookhaven staff massaged my heart back to loving life and most importantly, showed me how to love myself again.
Where to begin? How about in this moment?
Brookhaven Staff, When I got here it was the last place I wanted to be but I would do anything to get my son back.
The decision to come to Brookhaven was ultimately an easy decision for me – yes. But getting to that yes wasn't so easy.
To the staff at Brookhaven, It is hard to remember the woman I was when I came here on Sept. 19th. I know I felt scared, exhausted, helpless, bound up in my own expectations and not knowing what to do. I was a shell – doing whatever I was told and completely detached from my self.
Dear Brookhaven, Thank you for all of the memories. It has been an honor to be able to find a home in a therapeutic community.
While at Brookhaven I have been enveloped in a safe and secure “poncho” where I could begin to start my healing journey.
I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2009. After two hospitalizations for manic episodes I still had no clue how to truly cope with my illness until my parents sent me to Brookhaven in April of 2011. The holistic approach to true recovery utilized by Brookhaven is incomparable. Not only did I learn to accept my illness, but I learned to love and care for myself in a way I never thought possible. After my sixty-day stay, I left equipped with the skills I needed to cope with anything life decides to throw at me. I can say with honest conviction that I am happy and whole for the first time in my adult life, and it is all thanks…
Being at Brookhaven for 60 days provided me several key points of therapy: My psychiatrist, Dr. Wood, helped get me on the right medications that worked better for me. She monitored my progress and saw me on a bi-weekly basis, and was also accessible any day of the week if I was having crucial sleep issues that needed to be addressed right away. She adjusted my sleep medication for me throughout my entire stay to get it to its optimal effectiveness. Equine therapy provided a live scenario in which I received therapy from working with horses. The horses were so good at reading my emotions, and would respond to me accordingly. So I had to learn to be at ease…
When you first enter Brookhaven your mind, or shall we say my mind was filled with doubts, dependencies, and no knowledge of self. It was all I could do not to scream from the torture my mind was feeling. I slowly opened up little by little, class by class, talk by talk, core by core, meal by meal, rock by rock (rocking chair therapy), horse by horse. It has been a rocky at times gut-wrenching process. Learning that I can’t blame the world for all my problems and its not all my fault either. There were many decisions that brought me to the breaking point. Like in the example of the heron, though I was broken I didn’t wish to…
It was most rewarding to spend three months dedicated to thinking about my issues of depression and anxiety along with other women who have similar problems. I was able to listen and learn from others and their stories and apply them to my life and recovery. Classes were conducted seven days a week with instructors that spoke on topics related to the weeks issue. Handouts were given relating back to topics discussed. I benefited from group therapy five days a week twice a day with a therapist. Individual projects were presented and commented on by group and therapist. Therapist and group asked you questions pertaining to your projects and helped assist you solve issues you were trying to work on.…
