It was most rewarding to spend three months dedicated to thinking about my issues of depression and anxiety along with other women who have similar problems. I was able to listen and learn from others and their stories and apply them to my life and recovery.
Classes were conducted seven days a week with instructors that spoke on topics related to the weeks issue. Handouts were given relating back to topics discussed.
I benefited from group therapy five days a week twice a day with a therapist. Individual projects were presented and commented on by group and therapist. Therapist and group asked you questions pertaining to your projects and helped assist you solve issues you were trying to work on.
Therapist met with you on an individual weekly basis along with weekly family therapy. Therapists met with you another time during the week for an individual therapy session and to review any family or individual goals you were working on. I met with my therapist to finalize all long-term goals for after care and plan appointments with my Psychiatrist, local therapist and DBT therapy group. My therapist also went over my life goals set for me. I met all my goals set up.
We were given books on a weekly basis to read that were geared towards therapeutic recovery.
Spirituality classes were held each week, which helps tie the program together.
The equine therapy and ropes course were two programs geared toward building trust either with an animal or another individual during ropes course.
During my stay, I had two different roommates one for three weeks the other for three also. Both roommates were well suited in personality to mine. I was able to have a morning spiritual devotion with one. I was able to have excellent conversations involving the program with them both. We were able to assist one another in discussing our individual problems.
I very much appreciate being able to come to a program like Brookhaven. The majority of the women come here from all over the country and U.S. Islands. The majority of the women come here for depression, anxiety, abuse and addictions. I was able to identify with and grow in listening to each individual experience.
I feel this was a most beneficial program in which I learned DBT skills, which you can incorporate into your daily life. In using the after care phone call for alumnae and staying in contact with fellow friends from Brookhaven, you can keep yourself regularly in touch with your goals.
