Brookhaven Retreat’s experienced staff includes masters level physicians, nurses and therapists and is made up of some of the best professionals in the industry. The ratio of staff to clients allows greater access to resources and personalized care. 

Dr. Riley Senter, Director of Medicine

Dr. Senter brings more than 30 years of experience in alcohol, drug and mental health therapy and treatment to the Brookhaven Retreat team. He is an expert in the fields of comprehensive internal medicine, inpatient mental health, and outpatient behavioral medicine. During his career he has worked with women and men of all age groups and socioeconomic levels.

He joins Brookhaven from a position as Medical Director of the Hospitalist Program for Roane Medical Center. Dr. Senter has also served as a Medical Director for a variety of addiction recovery programs including Peninsula Hospital, Cornerstone of Recovery, Another Chance Recovery Program and the Overlook Clinic.

Dr. Senter’s treatment approach is holistic and addresses the client’s entire body and mind, as well as their environment.

Joanna Kluck, Registered Dietitian

Joanna has more than 28 years experience in administering and supervising clinical dietetics. She serves as an adjunct professor of Nutrition and Menu Planning for Walters State Community College, and most recently worked as a Registered Dietitian for a $12 million medical supply and services company with more than 500 customers. Joanna holds an MBA in Health Care Administration from Wayland Baptist University and a BS in Home Economics (Dietetics Specialization) from the University of Tennessee.

Lori McCarter, LPN

Lori is a licensed alcohol and drug abuse counselor who brings more than 16 years experience in the field. She managed a 42-bed support living facility for Cornerstone of Recovery in Knoxville, and has worked as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor for women in Knoxville area housing projects. In addition to her wealth of knowledge about drug and alcohol recovery, she brings a focus on Native American spirituality concepts to the Brookhaven program.

Monica Swallows, RN

Monica began in the nursing field in 1984 and has extensive work experience in drug and alcohol rehabilitation and the mental health arenas. She joined Brookhaven after five years as Social Services Director for Wharton Nursing Home. She has also worked as a home health care nurse and a staff nurse for Rebo Rehabilitation Center and the St. Luke West Psychiatric Unit. 

Melanie Wharton, CMSW

Melanie has worked as a therapist in a number of settings, including alcohol and drug abuse recovery for youth and adults, as a juvenile court probation worker, and as a teacher and therapist for children with mental and physical disabilities, as well as adults with mental illness.  She holds masters degrees in social work and Special Education from the University of Tennessee.
