BH training 1.26.18

Brookhaven Retreat® LLC, a unique residential treatment facility exclusively for women with mental health and/or substance abuse issues, held a training focused on Person-Centered Care and the further development of policies and procedures consistent with this philosophy on January 26, 2018 at RT Lodge in Maryville, TN. Brookhaven Retreat consultants, Dr. Jennifer Payne, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Scott Migdole, Assistant Clinical Professor at the Yale University School of Medicine, facilitated the review and training.

The content of the trainings was broken into two sessions. The first, focused exclusively on person-centered care and empowering clients to make decisions about their care. Group discussion centered on the importance of person-first language, shared decision making, the fostering of individual self-direction in treatment planning, the social and environmental needs of the individual and ensuring a respectful and responsive response to the cultural needs of the individual. It further highlighted the important role of family members and caregivers in the implementation of services. Founder Jacqueline Dawes, says, “it is important to meet a client where she is at, as what they need is unique to them. No one is their diagnosis.” The second part of the day focused on quality improvement and policy review. Areas related to quality of care, risk management, and ensuring a sensitive, person-centered orientation for each client on admission were discussed in detail. Within this context, Ms. Dawes noted that while policies are important “it is essential we communicate with each other”, as that is at the core of effective service delivery.

Brookhaven Retreat will hold similar trainings each quarter to ensure that 2018 is the best year yet!
